Travel Guide To Claveria, Cagayan

CLAVERIA: THE COASTAL PARADISE OF THE NORTH

Cagayan has a wide expanse of beautiful, fine sand beaches along coastal towns and in the islands of Palaui, Fuga, and Calayan. This province provides a never ending adventure as it is known as a paradise for spelunking, trekking, island hopping and game fishing.

Finally, I can tick off Claveria on my bucket list. I've been dreaming to visit this destination for years and just few weeks ago, I was just here! I fell in love with Claveria so quickly, making me plan for my return this summer.

Claveria, a third-class municipality in Cagayan, has a total population of at least 30,000 people based on the 2015 census. This town is politically subdivided into 41 barangays. Originally, Claveria had 29 barangays but sometime in July 1982 through the leadership of former Mayor Placido P. Leaňo, some of the barangays were divided into two or three barangays. Thus, the 29 barangays became 41.

Claveria is overshadowed by the famous Palaui Island in Santa Ana and Tuguegarao City. However, this town has its own charm, detaching you from the urban turmoil and to help you rejuvenate your senses to experience the world in detail, where the seafood is fresh, the beach is incredibly beautiful and the internet connection is stronger with people and nature. Such a perfect destination for a digital detox.

THE LEGEND OF APO LAKAY-LAKAY

Long time ago, there was a family living in Claveria who got wealthy through fishing. The couple who were on their golden age was blessed having a precious young son. They love their son so dearly. Despite living a happy life, they became greedy and unwanted.

One day, an old man came across the father who was on his way home from an abundant catch. The old man was starving so he requested the father if he could spare a bite from one of the fishes he would cook. The father laughed off his request. The old man said, "You'll regret it if you will not!". The father continued walking until he reached home.

While the couple were cooking that night, an old lady came knocking at their door. The old lady pleaded for a bite of fish since she was very hungry. The wife yelled at her exclaiming they have nothing to give. The wife keep pushing her away. The old lady then gave a warning the couple would regret if they won't give her. Unfortunately, the old lady went away empty handed.

When food was ready for dinner, they found out that their son was missing. They went out to search for their son, asking their neighbors for help. Instead of going home, they spent the night at the shore waiting for the sun to rise. That morning, they found their son across the waves in the east. Despite the tiring night long search, they ran so quickly. They were heart broken to find their beloved son turned to stone.

Unfortunately, the couple went back home weeping. The wife blamed her husband for being useless and greedy. Suddenly, her husband turned into stone just in front of her. She noticed the waves on her feet and slowly she turned to stone as well.

To date, the two towering rock formations located in Taggat Lagoon are known as Apo Lakay-lakay (Old Man) and Apo Baket-baket (Old Woman). Their beloved son Ubing-ubing (Child) can be found in Sentinela Beach across Claveria Bay.

TOP PLACES TO VISIT IN CLAVERIA

Claveria has a ton of exciting places to explore: from the beautiful, fine beaches, waterfalls, mountains, a lagoon including a view deck, overlooking the downtown.

BANTAY KALBO: The Bantay Kalbo is worth the hike. Yes, you read it right. Once you reached the Sentinela Beach, hike for at least 10 minutes to be amazed with the breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. The big rock formations and the sea is a feast to the eyes. A drone shot would look pretty amazing if I had one. Haha.☺ The view on top is comparable to Batanes. Bantay Kalbo houses an abandoned telecommunication tower.

SENTINELA BEACH: The Sentinela Beach is known as the home of Ubing-ubing, the son of Apo Lakay-lakay and Apo Baket-baket. Views here are absolutely amazing. For sure, every shots you'll take here are Instagram-worthy. Amazing, right?

TAGGAT LAGOON: So far, Taggat Lagoon is my favorite destination in Claveria. Taggat gives you a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean. Several boats are docked here as it is the gateway to Fuga Island and Calayan Island. The cove is known as the home of Apo Lakay-lakay and Apo Baket-baket.

NAGSABARAN HANGING BRIDGE: The Nagsabaran Hanging Bridge is made of wood and it was a bit of an adventure walking across it. Views here are very relaxing. Imagine the mountains, the rice fields, a river and the hanging bridge... awesome, right?

If you're staying longer in Claveria, please visit the Mabnang Falls; Claveria Cove; Cabicungan River; and enjoy the Egret bird watching activity. I will visit these destinations very soon. So, you better save this post and follow me on Facebook for updates.
