How Far Can You See

Hello! Sharing with you all my first speech at Toastmasters International.
I'm currently taking the Dynamic Leadership pathway.

Fellow Toastmasters and guests, good evening!

Imagine this: you are on top of a mountain, enjoying the beautiful views while taking a rest, when someone dear to your heart have asked you a very serious and a quite challenging question: "How far can you see?"

My father has asked me that question. He was my inspiration and has the greatest influence in my life. "Father, I can see the horizon and it is endless", I answered.

After hearing my answer, he came close to me, tapped my back and said "If that’s how far you can see then that’s how far you can go".

He was right. There are billions of people living in this world and opportunities keep on knocking. We tend to let go of these opportunities because we feel that we aren’t that competent and confident enough to compete with thousands of people vying for that certain position at work or for that certain opportunity you’ve been dreaming of or you’ve been praying for so long.

The horizon is endless, so with opportunities. Joining Toastmasters is just one of the many platforms to better myself. I’m extremely excited to see my progress here especially with regard to public speaking. I’m also here to overcome shyness because I’m afraid to talk to other people especially those that I think very superior.

I want to prove something for myself. And, in doing that, I shouldn’t delay it. I shouldn’t wait for forever. I’m not getting any younger.

Toastmaster Emmanuel revealed last week, in his speech, that he enrolled himself to a Korean class. Also, Toastmaster Edward said he joined Toastmasters to become an effective leader and speaker. Toastmaster Abba, our incoming President for Tambuli Toastmasters Club, envision himself to become one of the likes of DTM Dina and DTM Doni. Shining like a diamond despite the pressure he's getting from work.

And, I’m here to learn and to embrace every possible opportunity to become the best version of myself. That’s simply because I can see myself grabbing opportunities in the next coming years, because that’s how far I can go.

Fellow Toastmasters, especially to our guests, don’t be afraid to go out there, surround yourselves with positive and encouraging people, enroll to personal development training until you overcome your weaknesses. Turn these weaknesses to strengths.

One of Coldplay’s songs says: "if you’ll never try, you’ll never know". Trust me, the horizon is endless and that’s how far you can go. Now, fellow Toastmasters and guests, let me take you back to that mountain. How far can you see?
